Cathy Crawford, age 74, of Red Cloud died Wednesday December 16, 2009 at her home in Red Cloud.
Funeral services were held Saturday, 2:00 p.m., December 19, 2009 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Red Cloud with the Vicar Chad Boggs officiating. Interment was at the Red Cloud Cemetery.
Catherine Marie Crawford, the daughter of Dora E. (Grother) and David Schulteis, was born May 3, 1935 at Kansas City, Missouri. She departed this life after a heroic 7 year battle with multiple myeloma on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at her home in Red Cloud at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 13 days.
Cathy was a long time resident of the Red Cloud community. She spent her childhood year in Fairway, Kansas. She was a graduate of Shawnee Mission North High School with the class of 1953. Cathy continued her formal education and graduated from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas with an Elementary Education degree and was united in marriage with Robert F. Crawford in 1958. They made their home in Manhattan, Kansas where she taught the third grade, while her husband was attending Veterinarian College at Kansas State University. Later they moved to Winner, South Dakota and then Hooper, Nebraska, before settling in Red Cloud in 1964.
Cathy spent those early years very involved with the activities of her three children: Chris, Beth and Bill. She will be lovingly remembered for her unbelievable patience, courage and perseverance. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and was active with the Ladies Aid. She worked for the Red Cloud schools as a substitute teacher, served on the Red Cloud School Board of Education, and the Auld Public Library Board.
She was an active member of the community and belonged to several organizations including the International Chapter of P.E.O. Sisterhood, Red Cloud Golf Club, Republican Valley Arts Council, Needles and Friends Quilter's Guild, and the Willa Cather Book Club.
Preceding her in death were her parents, David and Dora Elizabeth Schulteis.
Left to treasure her memory are her husband, Robert F. Crawford; her children, Christine and Bob Compton of Overland Park, Kansas; Elizabeth and Rodney Ohmstede of Smith Center, Kansas and William and Linda Crawford of El Segunda, California; grandchildren: Lauren, Alexandra and William Compton; Hannah and Carley Ohmstede, and Heidi Massey; a sister, Betty Barton of Leawood, Kansas; many cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Memorials are suggested to the Cathy Crawford Memorial Fund.
