Orley George Schmidt the son of William and Lydia Gobel Schmidt was born July 1, 1914 on a farm south of Riverton, Nebraska in Franklin County. He departed this life on Tuesday, December 01, 2009 at the Golden Living Center in Franklin, Nebraska at the age of 95 years and 5 months.
Orley attended Rock Creek District #28 School in Franklin County. Orley was united in marriage to Dorothy Jackson on October 17, 1938 in Smith Center, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of five children, four sons and one daughter. Orley farmed in the Riverton, Red Cloud area nearly his entire life along with his wife Dorothy. He had also been employed by both Franklin and Webster Counties for a short while. Orley and Dorothy retired from the farm and moved into Riverton in 1971. Orley was a proud fence builder for many years, he took great pride in his work and ability to build straight fence.
Orley had always raised a big garden which included potatoes and popcorn which he shared with family and friends. Orley's greatest love was that for his grandchildren and great grandchildren, he always looked forward to time spent with them.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy on October 2, 2007, son Tom on February 8, 1989, and seven brothers.
Survivors include his sons Jim Schmidt of Riverton, NE; Jack Schmidt and wife Mai of Riverton, NE; Bill Schmidt and wife Gloria of Gibbon, NE; daughter Joan Brooks and husband Cecil of Red Cloud, NE; brother Gary Schmidt of Phillips, NE: sisters Alice Deisley of Franklin, NE; Delores Christy of Pasco, WA; 8 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held this Friday 10:30 AM, December 4, 2009 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Red Cloud. Pastor Ron Kuehner and Vicar Chad Boggs will be officiating. Burial will be held in the Riverton Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.wmsfh.com. Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of the arrangements.
