_______________
William Edwin "Bill" Mountford was born April 29, 1929 at Red Cloud, Nebraska to Glen and Ruby (Koon) Mountford. He departed this life on Friday, October 16, 2009 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 80 years.
Bill graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1947 and was known statewide as the winner of the "Miracle Mile" at that year's Nebraska High School Boys State Track Meet. His record time remained unbroken until 1964. He attended the University of Nebraska. On December 27, 1949 Bill Mountford and Miriam White were married in her hometown, Sheridan, Wyoming. Generations of the Mountford family were long-time residents of Red Cloud where Bill was active in local, state, and national politics, and was a leader in civic organizations, served on the city council, as mayor, and on the Board of Governors of the Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial and Educational Foundation. A successful businessman, in 1977 he was named National Agent of the Year by the Professional Insurance Agents Association.
Bill Mountford and Louise Eldred were married September 14, 1997 and moved to Lincoln where they continued to be active in the community. Bill was a Mason and a member of the Ak-sar-ben Shrine. In 2000 he was inducted into the Nebraska High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. In addition to his lifelong encouragement and support of student athletes, his personal philanthropy was centered in the Methodist churches in Red Cloud and Lincoln and extended worldwide as he sponsored foreign missions, schools, and students from South America, India, and Africa. In recognition of his leadership and influence, he was granted an honorary degree from Hastings College in 1980.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Miriam, and an infant son. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife Louise Mountford of Lincoln; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patty and Jim Doty of Owasso, Oklahoma, Jenni and Dr. Dave Aske of Greeley, Colorado; a son, Dr. Fritz Mountford of Hastings, Nebraska; a sister, Norma Jean Ferrens of Hutchinson, Kansas; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Bernadine and John Wherry of Pawnee City, Nebraska, and Glenda and Fred Kirkpatrick of Luray, Kansas; granddaughter and husband Osric and Kathleen (Doty) Woods; and grandchildren Andrew and Jessica Doty, and Trip and Jadyn Aske. Those left to cherish his memory include his extended family, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, friends, and loved ones.
Memorial services are scheduled for 10 a.m., wednesday, October 21, 2009 at Christ United Methodist Church in Lincoln. Graveside services will be held 3:00 p.m., Wednesday at the Red Cloud Cemetery with Rev. Steve Eldred and Rev. Fred Kirkpatrick officiating.
