John A. Hakanson, 85, of Bettendorf, died Friday, September 18, 2009 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice – Genesis VNA in Bettendorf. Services to celebrate his life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly Road at Jersey Ridge, Davenport with Rev. Katherine Mulhern officiating. Visitation will be from 4 – 7 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will take place in John's home town of Edgar, Nebraska.
John Alfred Hakanson was born in 1924 in Edgar, Nebraska, the sixth of seven children born to William L. and Lora M. Hakanson. Growing up on the farm, he cultivated a lifelong interest in farming, eventually earning a BA degree in Agriculture from the University of Nebraska. He served his country during WWII, attaining the rank of PFC in the US Army.
On August 22, 1948 he was united in marriage to Bethylene Stephenson in Clay Center, Nebraska. Following their marriage, John continued to pursue his love for farming in the poultry and feed business as well as raising hogs and crop farming. They later moved to Iowa, where John was the assistant plant manager at Steckley Hybrid See Corn Co. in Clinton before joining Deere and Co. in 1958. He retired from John Deere in 1982 as an advanced analyst engineer.
John was a 60-year member of both the Masons and the Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a member of Edwards Congregational-United Church of Christ in Davenport.
An avid bridge player, he was always up for a card game. He was also a loyal Cardinals fan, and a lifelong "Husker".
Survivors include his wife, Beth, Bettendorf; sons and daughters in law, Jay and Susan Hakanson, Davenport and Kirk and Sharon Hakanson, LeClaire; eight grandchildren: Christine Reyes; L. Mikel (Jennifer) Hakanson; Jason (Julie) Sage; Cynthia Hakanson; Sonia Hakanson; Shawn (Suzanne) Hakanson; Kaylyn Hakanson and Robin Paulsen; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, William "Bill" Hakanson, Edgar, NE; a brother-in-law, Duane Butler, Lincoln, NE; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his five sisters: Rosemary, Lois, May, Elinor and Roberta.
