Xrepha W. Flavin-Martin, age 85, of Newton, Kansas died Sunday, February 21, 2010 at the Newton Medical Center in Newton, Kansas.
Funeral services were held Thursday, 2:00 p.m., March 4, 2010 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Esbon, Kansas with Rev. George Chalbhagam officiating. The Rosary was recited Wedneday, 7:30 p.m. at the church. Interment was at St. Elizabeth Cemetery at Esbon.
Xrepha Wanda Flavin-Martin, the daughter of Viola (Danby) and Elmer Griffin, was born December 27, 1924 at Cassody, Kansas. She departed this life on February 21, 2010 at the Newton Medical Center in Newton, Kansas.
Xrepha spent her childhood years in Cassody and graduated from high school with the class of 1942. She continued her formal education in Wichita, where she studied for nursing training. It was here that she met and married Edward Patrick "Pat" Flavin on November 15, 1944. Pat and Xrepha made their home in Wichita for a number of years. Pursuing their love of farming, they later moved to the Esbon community. They later dedicated their time and became involved with their son operating their dairy for several years. Xrepha worked as a teller with the State Bank of Esbon from 1976 until her retirement. Following her husband, Pat's death in 1984, she later married Loren "Pug" Martin. They enjoyed a number of years together and continued to live at Esbon where he also preceded her in death.
She was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church in Esbon and a member of the Altar Society. For many years she was the church organist. In her leisure time she enjoyed gardening, quilting, working with various crafts and growing her flowers. She always looked forward to time spent with her friends and was a member of the Blue Stockings Bridge Club and the Sweet Adelines Choir. Due to her failing health, Xrepha moved to Newton, Kansas in July of 2007.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husbands, Pat, on October 21, 1984, and Loren "Pug" Martin; an infant daughter, Mary Angela; 5 brothers, Arnold, Ed, John, Louis and Junior Griffin; a sister, Tiny Baggot; and a son-in-law, Jerry Rausch.
Left to cherish her memory are eight children: Jim Flavin and wife Louise of Georgetown, Ohio; Carol Rausch of Colwich, Kansas; Greg Flavin and wife Gayla of Esbon, Kansas; Sharon Kilgore and husband Steve of Wichita, Kansas; John Flavin and wife Linda of Mankato, Kansas; Dennis Flavin and wife Alisa of Esbon, Kansas; Mike Flavin and wife Debbie of Newton, Kansas; and Deanna Pomiji and husband Jeff of Pahrump, Nevada; 20 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Also surviving are 3 sisters, Elsie Brady; Virginia Callaway and husband Gene; and Effie Wakefield; 3 sisters-in-law, Vi Griffin; Doris Griffin; and Phyllis Griffin; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorials are suggested to the Esbon Sacred Heart Catholic Church, or the American Diabetes Association.
